Alan was an outstanding striker for Arsenal and England. He started his career with Leicester City, before moving south to join the Gunners where he won two league titles, the FA Cup, League Cup and European Cup Winners’ Cup. Arsenal fans will always remember ‘Smudge’ as a scorer of vital goals. He scored one and made one in the memorable win at Anfield that clinched the First Division title in 1989. He also scored the winning goal in the 1994 European Cup Winners’ Cup Final. Alan won 13 full caps for England and was known as a perfect ‘target man’ whose intelligence and reading of the game were second to none. Since retiring, Alan has built a highly successful new career as a football journalist and broadcaster. He writes regularly for the Daily Telegraph and is also a respected member of the of the award-winning Sky Sports commentary team.
