Goalkeeping hero Alex played over 600 games during his career, but he will always be best remembered for the save he made from Eusabio when Manchester United beat Benfica to win the European Cup at Wembley in 1968. Eusabio was through with just the 'keeper to beat and seemed sure to grab the winner, but Alex stood firm and United went on to win a famous victory in extra-time. Bobby Charlton, Denis Law, Georgie Best: these are just some of the great names Alex talks about in his hugely successful after dinner speeches. At international level, Alex only won one England cap. It was an era of outstanding England ‘keepers with Gordon Banks, then Peter Shilton making the position their own. But Alex will always be a hero at Old Trafford. He still works for the club giving fans tours of the world-famous stadium. He also hosts his own radio show in Manchester.
