Martin was a gifted goalscorer who shone at the highest level for Spurs, Southampton and England. He scored 21 goals in his first full season for the south coast club and went on to forge a winning partnership with Saints legend Terry Paine. Martin combined physical power with skill and subtlety on the ball. In 1968, Spurs manager Bill Nicholson signed Martin for £125,000. Over the next eight years, ‘Chiv’ scored over 200 goals for Tottenham and became a UEFA Cup and League Cup winner. After leaving Spurs, Martin played for clubs including Norwich City and Brighton, before retiring to run a hotel and restaurant in Hertfordshire. Martin’s autobiography ‘Big Chiv’ was published in 2009. In it he looks back at a career filled with brilliant goals and big name players. Forever a legend at White Hart Lane, Martin remains a very popular member of the Spurs matchday hospitality team.
